Roy is the singer of Newcastle based band, Ground Culture, OG Sock representative and all round good guy. We caught up with Roy amidst of the bands current UK tour.
Hey Roy, hows it going?
Oioiii my lovelies.
Hows tour been going?
Tour has been super sick so far. It’s genuinely my first touring experience where every single person involved in the touring party is an absolute vibe. My voice is holding up nice and the lads are smashing it on a level. Few more days left and then I’m coming back to the motherland!
Whats been the highlight so far?
Absolutely any scenario where The Egg (Doddsy) is around me for starters, man. That bloke always delivers the most premium banter and I’ve been ill laughing everyday.
The best individual moment was in Liverpool. The promoter tried to bail and not pay the bands so GC went full on Liam Neeson (minus the executions) and hunted him out on the mean streets and got paid cash cash money haha!
Have you been playing songs off your up and coming release?
We have aye! We’ve dropped 3 bangers from the record into the live set, plus an intro that’s not gonna be on a record but bops to bits! Two of the freshies are out to listen to right now. Another is going to be unveiled in the coming weeks, so keep watching this space.
What’s the album about? Do you have a theme or something specific you are trying to say?
‘How Well Do You Really Know Yourself?’ Is focused a lot on my internal world, the emotional fluctuation of my last few years and specific points that have effected me or people around me. There’s a duality to everything I’m saying lyrically though.. This album is also for anybody at all who can connect with what I’m saying in their own way through experience or whatever headspace they’re in at the time.
What I’m saying is that we’ve all got through 100% of our bad days so far and it’s the pain, the hurdles and the mistakes that ultimately make us that absolute force to be reckoned with in the end!
Whats your favourite tune to play live and why?
Definitely ‘REALEYES’ and a track called ‘Trauma Can Teach’. The messages are deep and the tracks are so rapid! That much energy is infectious, I love it!
On to fashion, how are the OG’s treating you?
OG’s are literally that good, that if I have to wear a different pair of socks on any given day I receive a -10 bump to my agility, speed, stamina and conversational skills... They’re the best socks I’ve had and getting to work with the lads is a double bonus. Up the mags!
Which are your favourite style and why?
I absolutely love the OG Locos and the Playboy bunny vibe man. The comfort goes without saying, but they just loook super super sick and go with any outfit I have. OG/86 for life man!
